Client
Simple Pictures is a film making collective established in 2010 by The Halsall Brothers. Based in London and Seoul, they create bold and contemporary visual content; both drama and documentary.
Brief

‘Something In My Mind’ is a short film telling the tale of a disturbed and desperate assassin on a drug fuelled journey of chaos and mental disarray. The story swirls around the central character, showing his fractured mental state and splitting personality.

The project needed a one-sheet design that encapsulated the internal chaos of the film’s protagonist. To form an uncomplicated design that visualised the splits in personality; anger, frustration and despair.

Solution
The solution was to create a ‘monster’ of personalities. To merge the raging sides of the protagonist into a mutant portrait where the boundaries of each emotion fuse and blend together; pulling away from each other, yet knotted tight. The typographic title treatment came from a place of childhood; an adolescent scrawl of frustration developed into something viscerally uncomfortable.
Result

The project delivered a surreal, visually bold one-sheet design as well as an illustration and title treatment that was applied to the film’s online presence.

"This was a very personal project, so it was important that the tone of the poster adequately set up the film people were about to watch. Tonally, this film is a bit wild, and strives to create an emotional connection to a man whose actions are horrific. Rob guided me through a variety of potential (and amazing!) designs for this poster before landing on something so simple and elegant and raw, that perfectly crystallises everything the film strives to achieve. In a single image he captured what I strained to in 14 minutes. Unfortunately, as with a lot of the work Rob has done, his posters go on to be a lot better than the films they are made for. My career as a writer-director is now about trying to make films that live up to Rob’s posters!"
