Simple Pictures is a film making collective established in 2010 by The Halsall Brothers. Based in London and Seoul, they create bold and contemporary visual content; both drama and documentary.
Brief

‘If I Had A Heart’ is a Rook Films produced, short film set in South Korea. It tells the tale of a bare knuckle fighter lost in a world of crime, betrayal and revenge, eaten up by his inner turmoil and abandonment trauma.

The project required a one-sheet poster design for it’s promotional campaign. The design needed to be easily applied to online promotion, including avatars and video thumbnails.

Solution
The concept was to create a dual image, that linked to both the film’s title, and represented the protagonist’s social detachment due to the abandonment by his mother at an early age. His foetal positioning, which he adopts at multiple points throughout the film was used to echo the shape of a human heart.

The success of the poster design wouldn’t have been the same without the brilliant Korean calligraphy created by Brother Tak.
Result

The project delivered a striking, yet simple one-sheet design that was used as a central promotional tool for the project. The design was also selected to be included in ‘Head to Toe’; a book exploring the use of the nude within graphic design.

‘Head To Toe: The Nude In Graphic Design’ By Mirko Ilic & Steven Heller (RizzoliUSA)

“Online, a short film’s poster/thumbnail is the very first impression your audience has and with fickle attention spans, first impressions are everything. We knew we wanted something simple, bold and eye-catching. Rob’s sublime concept of a grown man tucked up into a foetal position simultaneously looking like a human heart still blows my mind now. How he thought of that concept, which just so phenomenally captures the essence of the film, but moreover, then to execute it with such detail and expression is a testament to both Rob's intelligence and skill.”
